AI Visibility
Being the business the AI recommends

What decides whether ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews name you when a customer asks, and the signals you can strengthen so you are the answer more often.
People no longer only search, they ask
More customers now put their question to an assistant instead of a search box. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overview for the best option near them and take the shortlist it hands back. Being named on that shortlist is becoming its own kind of visibility, separate from where you rank on a results page.
The unnerving part is that you cannot see it happening. There is no ranking report for "did the assistant recommend me", so most owners have no idea whether they are the answer or the rival is.
What decides whether you get named
Assistants do not invent recommendations. They assemble them from what the web already says about you, which means the same honest signals that help with search tend to help here too:
- Consistent, accurate details about your business across the places it appears.
- A body of genuine reviews that describe what you actually do well.
- Being mentioned in the roundups and lists people write about your category.
- Content that plainly answers the questions customers ask, in their words.
There are no shortcuts worth taking
It is tempting to look for a trick, but the tactics that game an assistant are the same ones that get you penalised everywhere else: fake reviews, invented claims, stuffing your profile with things you do not offer. Assistants are trained on a broad view of what the web says, so consistency and honesty travel further than any single clever move.
Start with the basics you control
You cannot control what a model says, but you can strengthen what it draws on. Keep your profile complete and current, keep genuine reviews coming, and answer them like a business that is paying attention. Those are the same habits that win the search and the walk-in, and they are the ground an assistant stands on when it decides who to name.
